I’ve been working on a series of paintings, the majority of which have been inspired by the unseen rooms of Versailles, those inaccessible to the public. The others are of rooms that were familiar to me in my childhood and are now deserted. The common theme is the palpable sense of abandonment, loneliness and the silence that shrouds them. My latest drawings were sparked by Russian silent movies of the 1920s. I’m struck by the character of the faces in those movies and by the energy their gestures and bodies emanate. Their strength is raw and frills are conspicuously absent. I'm now adding whimsical and humorous drawings to my body of work, often inspired by a single image on which I build by letting my imagination guide me.
