| Artist: Aaron Nutter | View all images by this person Born in 1984, Aaron Nutter grew up in Lancaster Pennsylvania. His father would take Aaron along with him on photography explorations. It is these explorations that helped him develop an interest in photography at such an early age. He now documents Coal communities in Pennsylvania. Aaron has recently exhibited at The Stark Gallery, The Peach Tree International Film Festival, The Demuth Museum, and Rowan University. He is a member of the recently formed artists collective Sixteen Pound Rabbit.(SPRAC)//// Heartland
In 2008 President Barack Obama attempted to explain the perceived resentment from small towns in Pennsylvania. He was quoted as saying “. . .and it’s not surprising when they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them. . .”. I found this atmosphere, condensed by the depopulation brought on by hard times, as I photographed in the small towns of central Pennsylvania. Towns like Johnstown, Tower City and Colver, which form what is known as the “T” of the state. This area includes the rural communities located between Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, and along the northern part of the state.
What I discovered in such towns were many similarities. Most towns I explored did in fact have a failing industry. I found yards and homes filled with flags, banners and signs supporting faith and country. I found people holding on to this ideal. I found people who expressed fear and mistrust of the world outside of their community. I am interested in what has been ignored, and what has been left behind. I am interested in the loss of hope and the struggle to survive.
